1. Label the sides

  • the side opposite the right angle is the hypotenuse (hyp)
  • the side opposite the angle you are trying to find (?) is the opposite (opp)
  • the remaining side is the adjacent

2. Work out which trig ratio to use:

  • sin θ = opp/hyp, cos θ = adj/hyp, tan θ = opp/adj, where θ is the angle you are trying to find out
  • because you have the adjacent and the hypotenuse, you can use cos

3. Find the angle:

  • you can substitute your values into the equation
  • cos θ = 45/52
  • to get θ on its own, you need to do the inverse of cos: θ = cos-1(45/52) which is 30.073.. ≈ 30°
