let on number be x then the other number is x + 6

sum the 2 numbers and equate to 26

x + x + 6 = 26

2x + 6 = 26 ( subtract 6 from both sides )

2x = 20 ( divide both sides by 2 )

x = 10

x + 6 = 10 + 6 = 16

the 2 numbers are 10 and 16
