The Congress attempted to find a solution to the conflict between North and South States about Slavery by adopting the Compromise of 1850. The Compromise of 1850 was a group of five laws, one of them was known as the "Fugitive Slave Act" which said fugitive slaves had to be returned to their owner. This Act wanted to stop the escape of slaves to northern States and to punish anyone who protected them because of the economic loss that the southern states were facing because of it.
