Which factors should be considered when evaluating whether an adaptation is a success?

Adaptation of one story to another medium, such as a film adaptation in form of a movie, can be evaluated with respect to whether it is successful if we know for example

- the effects that the choices made in this adaptation had on the viewers/ readers
- if we can compare it to the original, for example, if we know if it was more enjoyable than the original.
