Mrs. Kenders earns $20 per hour and works 40 hours per week. She pays 5% of her weekly earnings to state taxes and 25% of her weekly earnings to federal taxes.

After the combined taxes have been deducted, how much does Mrs. Kenders earn each week?

so the total deduction is 5+25 or 30%
find pay per week
20 per hour
40 hour
20 times 40=800
subtract 30%
30% of 800
percent means parts out of 100
30%=30/100
'of' means multiply
30/100 times 800=24000/100=240
subtract
800-240=560

she earns $560 per week

$20 * 40hrs = $800 weekly earnings.

state taxes = 5% * $800 = $40
federal taxes = 25% * $800 = $200

$800 - $40 - $200 = $560 net weekly earnings.

Both taxes are based on her weekly earnings that is why the percentages are multiplied to $800
