x is the first section soit the second is 6x
and x + 6x = 7x = 35 ft => x = 5 ft

Answer: 5 feet

Explanation:

Given: The total length of the rope = 35 feet

Let the length of the shorter section be x, then the longer section would be 6x.

According to the question, we have

x+6x=35\\\\\Rightarrow7x=35\\\\\Rightarrow x=(35)/(7)\\\\\Rightarrow x=5\ feet

Also,
6x= 6(5)=30\ feet

Hence, the length of the shorter section = 5 feet
