To begin with;

Observe that there are three angles in the diagram

Angle JKM

Angle MKL

Angle JKL

Observe very closely that angle JKL is actually a combination of JKM and MKL.

That is,


\begin{gathered} \angle JKL=\angle JKM+\angle MKL \\ \text{Note also that angle JKL is represented by 3x+5} \\ \text{Substitute for the given expressions as follows;} \\ \angle JKL=\angle JKM+\angle MKL \\ 3x+5=45+x \\ \text{Collect all like terms and you now have;} \\ 3x-x=45-5 \\ 2x=40 \\ \text{Divide both sides by 2} \\ (2x)/(2)=(40)/(2) \\ x=20 \\ \text{The measure of }\angle JKL\text{ therefore is;} \\ \angle JKL=3x+5 \\ \angle JKL=3(20)+5 \\ \angle JKL=60+5 \\ \angle JKL=65 \end{gathered}

The degree measure of angle JKL is 65.
