So to do this:

Take away 3 from each side.
So you're doing:
3x + 3 - 3 = 9 - 3
This simplified to 3x = 6
Divide 3x by 3 to get x on its own and divide 6 by 3 to get 2.
This means that x = 2.

Answer: x = 2

Step-by-step explanation: To solve for x, we must first isolate the term containing x which in this problem is 3x.

Since 3 is being added to 3x, we subtract 3 from both sides of the equation to isolate the 3x. On the left, the +3 and -3 cancel out and on the right, 9 - 3 is 6.

Now we can finish things off by just dividing both sides of the equation by 3. On the left the 3's cancel and on the right 6 divided by 3 is 2.

So x = 2 and you can check your answer by plugging 2 back in for x in the original show below in bold.

3(2) + 3 = 9
