The 1790 Census information showed that most enslaved people lived in the South, but they were also found in all other states, except Maine and Massachusetts.

The census also showed that some states had more slaves than free white men, and the state of Virginia was the one with the largest number of slaves, followed by North and South Carolina, and Maryland. These states' economy relied mostly on cash crops and plantation.

Although there were enslaved people in practically all areas of the United States during this time, a vast majority of them were in the South, since this is where they were worked on large farms that produced cash crops.
