The area of a rectangle is l x w. So the area of the square is 10 x 10 = 100

The area of a circle is


\pi * {r}^(2)

The radius of all the circles is 2 inches.


\pi * {2}^(2) = \pi * 4 \: or \: 4\pi

There are 4 circles so the area of all four is


4 * (4\pi) \: or \: 16\pi

To find the area of the shaded part of the square, subtract the area of all the circles, because they are not shaded, from the area of the square, because it is shaded. The difference will be the area of the shaded portion.


area \: = 100 - 16\pi


area = 100 - 50.6548

So the area is approximately 50 Sq in
