3(4y+8)=−12

(3)(4y)+(3)(8)=−12(Distribute)

12y+24=−12

Subtract 24 from both sides.

12y+24−24=−12−24

12y=−36

Divide both sides by 12.

12y/12=−36/12

y=−3

3(4y + 8) = -12

First, divide both sides by 3. / Your problem should look like:
4y + 8 = -(12)/(3)
Second, since 4 goes into 3 to get 12, simplify
(12)/(3) to 4. / Your problem should look like:
4y + 8 = -4
Third, subtract 8 from both sides. / Your problem should look like:
4y = -4 - 8
Fourth, subtract -4 - 8 to get -12. / Your problem should look like:
4y = -12
Fifth, divide both sides by 4. / Your problem should look like:
y = -(12)/(4)
Sixth, simplify
(12)/(4) to 3. / Your problem should look like:
y = -3

Answer: y = -3
