(x + 1) - (-2x - 5)

First, simplify. / Your problem should look like: x + 1 + 2x + 5
Second, gather like terms. / Your problem should look like: (x + 2x) + 1 + 5
Third, simplify. / Your problem should look like: 3x + 1 + 5
Fourth, simplify. / Your problem should look like: 3x + 6
