Ascending is when something starts at the bottom, then becomes higher. In a sentence : the teacher put the children in ascending order. descending is when something starts at the top, and decreases. In a sentence : The teacher put the children in descending order.

"Ascending" means starting low and going up.

"Descending" means starting high and coming down.
