The Athens was the main reason to end the Peloponnesian war. The Peloponnesian war was fought between the Athens and Sparta in Ancient Greece. Spartans spread their army and tried to attack Athens' borders. Athens didn't come out of the wall, because the athenian leader, Pericles refused. Instead, he ordered his people to find a way to attack the Spartans in the sea - since they don't want to attack them on land.
However, there was a plague outbreak which killed 1/3 of the population including Pericles, which led the Athens to give up and end the war.
Hope this helps.
