change the subtraction to add 2x plus -4x
5=-4x (+2x)-7

5=-2x-7

since the x's are now on one side and we can't do anything with 5, on the other side you change -7 to add to the other side.

5 (+7)= -2x

12= -2x

divide -2 by 12.

-6 = x
