2x + y = 7
x - y = 5

given 2x+y=7...1
x-y=5...2
put x=5+y in 1
2(5+y)+y=7
10+2y+y=7
3y=-3
y=-1
x=5+y
=5-1
=4

x=4 because the y cancel out and all your left with is 3x=12 the you divide by 3 and get 4
