The major themes are the third and the fourth options.

The subordination of women in marriage - Through her role in family and in society in the 19th century, the author shows how terrible it was to women to act independently and actually how it was impossible.

The importance of self-expression - The anxiety and the self-preservation are the driving forces which makes the protagonist to delve into her own madness. She cannot let her feelings out and she cannot express herself because she holds unreasonable truth for herself and she doesn't know that.
