Why does robinson crusoe heat a crow bar in the fire?

Robinson Crusoe was shipwrecked on an island. Luckily, he was able to gather everything he could use before losing the ship. Among these, was a crowbar. He heated it to the fire until it was white-hot. After which, he was able to bend it to make a good pickax.
