If a piece of fruit snack which is 1 foot long is cut into two pieces, and one part is 3/4 of a foot long, then what we have is;

To arrive at 4/4 as shown in step 2, we take the LCM of both expressions.

On the left is 1/1 and on the right is 3/4. The LCM of the denominators (that is 1 and 4) is 4. Hence 1 can now be re-written as 4/4.
