New port and Verona are 128 miles apart. A car leave new port traveling towards Verona and another car leaves Verona at the same time traveling towards new port. The car leaving new port averages 10 miles per hour more than the other, and they meet after 1 hour and 36 minutes. What are the average speeds of the cars?

Let the car leaving New port be called A with speed = 10 +x

Let car leaving Verona be called B with speed = x

Time = 1 hour 36 minutes = 1.6 hour

Use formula Speed = Distance / Time

Therefore Distance = Speed x Time

128 = ( 10+x)1.6 + x (1.6)

128 = 16 + 1.6x +1.6x

128 -16 = 3.2x

3.2x = 112

x = 35

This means that car A is faster with average speed of = 10 + 35 = 45 miles per hour;

whilst Car B speed is slow by average of 35 miles per hour.
