Dollars 36 = x
---------- ---- ----
Hours 4 7

4x= 252
---- -----
4 4

X=63

Explanation:
1) Set up how much she earns at certain times. Here they tell you she earns $36 in 4 hours so put it as 36/4.
2) They ask you how much she earns in 7 hours so you are looking for X (any number). Set 36/4 equal to x/7 because you know the hours but not the amount she wins.
3) Cross multiply (36•7= 252) and (4•X= 4x).
4) Since you have to find X, you have to leave it alone and take the 4 out of its side. You do this by doing the inverse of multiplication which is division. Divide 4x by 4 so the 4s will cancel out and leave the X alone. What you do to one side, do to the other so divide 252 by 4 and it gives you 63.

THEREFORE: Caroline can expect to earn $63 for working for 7 hours ☺.

First, find out how much Caroline earns for one hour: 36/4=9$ per hour.
Now that we know how much she earns for one hour, we can multiply it by 7: 9*7=63
So, Caroline earns 63$ for 7 hours.
