The way I do this is I start at 7, and count up to 12. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. And then I count how many numbers are there between 7 and 12. And there is 5. This is how I did subtraction in Elementary school.

12 - 7 is 5. you can count down 7 times from 12 like: 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5.
