They were popular because they stood up for the common people at a time when industry was developing rapidly and the rich were becoming worse and worse towards the people. The companies and banks were making a hard time for people and these politicians opposed that.

They were popular because they stood up for the common people at that time.

When industry was developing rapidly and the treatment that received by poor people became worsened.
This was shown in the life of the majority of farmers which basically had to do most of the workload with very little rewards. The speaks that made by people like lease and Bryan addressed this issue and many poor people could relate with them.
