As the larger number is twelve more than a smaller, so

x = y + 12

x + y = 84

now substituting x = y + 12 in th equation x + y = 84

x + y = 84

(y + 12) + y = 84

2y + 12 = 84

subtract 12 from both sides

2y + 12 - 12 = 84 - 12

2y = 72

divide both sides by 2

2y/2 = 72/2

y = 36
