The Vikings did set up short term settlements in the Americas as well as a major settlement in Greenland. However, it is not entirely known why the smaller settlements in North America did not grow or become more permanent. However, it is believed that the Vikings did maintain a trade of natural resources from North America to other settlements in places like Greenland for hundreds of years.
