For the first figure, draw a vertical line from the upper right corner to the base. Then you can see that the figure is a combination of two shapes: A rectangle that is 8 high and 6 wide, and a right triangle that has altitude of 8 and base of 4.
Area of rectangle = 8*6 = 48
Area of triangle = (1/2)*8*4 = 16
Total area = 48+16 = 64 square units

The second figure is a parallelogram with equal sides. Note that if you cut off the triangular area and attach it to the top of the figure, you get a rectangle, so the area is 15 times 16 = 24 units.
