To answer this question, we need to pose the question algebraically as follows:

1. The base fee is $18.95

2. Additional charge of $0.82 for each mile.

3. He paid $144.41.

The payment can be described as follows:

y=18.95+0.82x=144.41

Then, we need to solve the equation for x:

0.82x=144.41-18.95=125.46\Rightarrow0.82x=125.46\Rightarrow x=(125.46)/(0.82)=153

Therefore, Joe drove the truck for 153 miles.

We can check this result if we substitute the value of 153 in the original equation:

y=18.95+0.82\cdot(153)=18.95+125.46\Rightarrow y=144.41
