THE SUM OF 2 NUMBERS IS 40. ONE NUMBER IS 36 MORE THAN THE OTHER.

x - first number
x + 36 - second number

x + (x + 36) = 40
2x + 36 = 40 |subtract 36 from both sides
2x = 4 |divide both sides by 2

x = 2

x + 36 = 2 + 36 = 38

Answer: 2 and 38.
