half = 0.5

Ten times the sum of half a number and 6 is 8:

10 · (0.5x + 6) = 8 |use distributive property: a(b + c) = ab + ac
5x + 60 = 8 |subtract 60 from both sides
5x = -52 |divide both sides by 5
x = -10.4
