The answer is a receptor.

Receptors are proteins that respond to a chemical signal. The signaling molecules outside the cell bind to receptors which further activate different molecules inside the cell causing the response of the cell on the chemical signal. Receptors can be found on the cell membranes, in the cytoplasm, or in the nucleus.
