remember you can do ANTYTHING to an equaton as long as you do it to both sides

remember distributive property
a(b-c)=ab-ac

so
first distribute the 8 to theh (q-11)
8(q-11)=8q-88

now we have
20+8q-88=-12
8q-68=-12
add 68 to both sides
8q+68-68=68-12
8q+0=56
8q=56
divide both sides by 8
8q/8=56/8
1q=7
q=7

You distribute the 8 into q and -11 and you get 20+ 8q-88= -12. Now combine like terms -88 +20 or 88-20 and you get 8q - 68 = -12. Add 68 to both sides of the equal sign. You get 8q =56. Divide 8q by 8 and 56 by 8 to get q by itself. Finally your answer is q=7
