Before the war the colonies were ruled by a policy known as salutary neglect and they were used to being able to govern by themselves. However, when Britain made the rules tighter and decided to rule the colonies with more force, the colonists rebelled and thus the American Revolution began. The colonists would not accept change to their governing structures because of the lives they lived before. Self-government was so much better than rule from the British government so it was hard to go back to something very restrictive
