3x + 5y = -9
2x + y = -34

2x + y = -34
y = -2x - 34

3x + 5y = -9
3x + 5(-2x - 34) = -9
3x - 10x - 170 = -9
-7x = -9 + 170
-7x = 161
-7x/-7 = 161/-7
x = - 23

y = -2x - 34
y = -2(23) - 34
y = 46 - 34
y = 12

to check: x = -23 ; y = 12
3x + 5y = -9
3(-23) + 5(12) = -9
-69 + 60 = -9
-9 = -9

2x + y = -34
2(-23) + 12 = -34
-46 + 12 = -34
-34 = -34
