Why did workers in the late 1800s tolerate poor wages and working conditions?

Such wages were better than no wages, particularly when there was a family to feed and sustain. So, despite the insufferable conditions, many flocked to cities and worked in factories to make a more secure life for themselves.

They could be replaced easily by other workers.
