k is the number of units up or down the vertex of the graph was shifted.

Assuming that this is the graph
we can see that y = x^2 touch origin,
now it's shifted into (4, -2)
So the new equation woud be :
f(x) - 4 = (x + 2) ^2
f(x) = (x+2)^2 + 4 , .. . . .> which make k = 4
