Round 0.97 to the nearest tenth

0.97 the tenth digit is the first digit after the decimal point.

That is the 9.

The digit after the 9 is 7, and this is more than 5, so we add an extra 1 to the 9, and it becomes 10.

The 1 spills over to the right sides of the decimal point.

0.97 ≈ 1.0 to the nearest tenth.

The tens column is the one directly to the right of the decimal, so you need to get rid of the seven. Since the 7 is closer to ten than it is to zero (it's bigger than 5), you will round up. When you round up, you add 1 to the number on the left, the 9. So it will become 10, or 1.0
