2x + 4y = 12
now sub 1/4x - 3 in for y
2x + 4(1/4x - 3) = 12...distribute thru the parenthesis
2x + x - 12 = 12
2x + x = 12 + 12
3x = 24
x = 24/3
x = 8

y = 1/4x - 3
y = 1/4(8) - 3
y = 2 - 3
y = -1

solution is : (8,-1)
