You know that 1 inch is 6 miles and 1/4 inch is 1.5 miles. So 6 * 5 = 30, and 1.5 * 3 = 4.5. Now you need to add 30 + 4.5 and that equals 34.5. The actual distance between the two towns is 34.5 miles.

Answer:

34.5 miles

Explanation:

Hello, I think I can help you with this

Step 1

remember

a(b)/(c) =((a*c)+b)/(b)

hence

5(3)/(4)inch\ =((5*4)+3)/(4)\ inch\=(23)/(4)=.75\ inch\\(1)/(2) \ inch = 0.5\ inch

Step 2

you can solve this by using a simple rule of three

if

0.5 inch ⇒ 3 miles

5.75 ⇒ x miles?

(0.5\ inch)/(3\ miles)=(5.75\ inch)/( x) \\\\isolating\ x\\\\ (x*0.5\ inch)/(3\ miles) = 5.75\ inch\\x=(3\ miles*5.75\ inch)/(0.5\ inch)}\\ x=34.5 miles\\

so, the distance between the towns is 34.5 miles

Have a great day
