A proverb is a simple and concrete saying that has usually been passed down for generations. Proverbs are particular to a certain culture and they usually express knowledge that is based on common sense or experience. They are also often metaphorical. Proverbs are considered to be a part of folklore.

Some examples of proverbs are:

  • Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
  • It's no use locking the stable door after the horse has bolted.
  • All that glitters is not gold.
  • Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
