Its role is critical because its structural components provide the barrier that marks the boundaries of a cell. The lipid bi-layer is typically about five nano meters thick and surrounds all cells providing the cell membrane structure.

Answer:

Lipid bilayer constitutes the structure of the plasma membrane. Apart from the lipid bilayer, proteins are also present in the cell membrane. Carbohydrates are present in association with lipids and proteins.

Lipid bilayer maintains the fluidity of plasma membrane and maintain the structure of the membrane. Small non polar molecules can easily diffuse through the membrane due to the presence of lipid bilayer. The lipid bilayer acts as an anti-freezing in case of the organisms living in cold conditions.
