I suppose that the best answer for this question is "remorseful." I have reached this conclusion by determining that the other three words are fairly close in meaning, and so it would be difficult to eliminate just one of them. It is admittedly difficult to determine the tone of this passage, probably because I have not read the story myself. Either way, there are no words in the story to imply a tone of remorse, and one can argue that there are suggestions towards peace, gentleness, and sympathy. I hope this helps.
