During a scuba dive, Lainey descended to a point 23 feet below the ocean surface. She continued her descent at a rate of 20 feet per minute. Write an inequality you could solve to find the number of minutes she can continue to descend if she does not want to reach a point more than 123 feet below the ocean surface. Use the variable t for time.

What is the inequality??

Answer

-20-20x>-100

Explanation:

Let represent the number of minutes. Since she is descending 20 feet per

minute, then —201 represents her change in altitude. It is nega.ti'.v since

descending means her altitude is decreasing.

Since she started at 20 feet below the ocean surface, she started at —20 feet.

Its nogati'.•v since au altitude below the ocean surface must be represented

by a negatiw• number.

Her ending position is the sum of how far she has descended and her initial

position so her ending position is —20 + (—201) —

-20 - 201.

She doesn't want to travel more than 100 feet below the ocean surface so she

needs to be higher than —100 feet. Tho inequality is then —20— 20.T —100.
