The value of the unknown number x that is added to 40% to give a result of 210 is 150.

What is a word problem?

A word problem is a mathematical problem that is written in words with the aim of challenging the logical reasoning of the students to think critically and be able to express these problems into accurate mathematical equations using the appropriate conventional methods.

From the question given, Let the unknown number be x;

So, when 40% i.e. 0.4 (in decimal) of a number is added to the number;

i.e.

0.4x + x

Then, the result is 210.

0.4x + x = 210

1.4 x = 210

Divide both sides by 1.4 to determine the unknown number;

(1.4x)/(1.4)=(210)/(1.4)

x = 150

so it gives you the "= 210" part of it so you just need to figure out how to write "40% of a number is added to the number"

the questions already tells you that "the number" is "x"

so that means "40% of x is added to x"
instead of writing "add" you can replace it with a plus sign "+"
(40% of x) + x
another way to write 40% of x is 0.40x
so your equation is .4x + x = 210
