What is represented by the number “1” in the IUPAC name for three of these alcohols?

"1" represents the location of the -OH in the carbon chain but it is not limited only to -OH, it can also be other compounds or elements. For instance, 3-bromo-2-pentanol, the 3 represents that bromine is attached to the third carbon of the compound and 2 represents that -OH is linked to the second carbon.
