The decline of Detroit Michigan was due to the collapse of the auto industry. The big manufacturers such as General Motors, Chrysler and Ford began transferring their operations outside the area. Smaller manufacturers began to such down leaving many workers unemployed. New technology, taxes and increased automation also contributed to the decline.
