Jasmine has painted two of her bedroom walls. She wants to put decorative trim around the perimeter of the walls and around the door and window. The ceiling is 8 feet high. One wall is 18 feet in length, but it has a French door measuring 5 feet wide and 7 feet tall. The other wall is 15 feet in length and has a large window measuring 6 feet wide and 3 feet tall. She will not put trim at the base of the door.

Given the data below, the total length or amount of decorative trim can be calculated. It can be said that the total length of decorative trim is equal to the total perimeter of the two walls, the window, and the door, minus the base of the door.

Wall 1 = 2(8) + 2(18) = 52 ft.
Wall 2 = 2(8) + 2(15) = 46 ft.
Window = 2(3) + 2(6) = 18 ft.
Door = 2(7) + 5 = 19 ft.

Total length = 52+46+18+19 = 135 ft. of decorative trim
