What element in the excerpt from Life on the Mississippi most suggests that it is a realist text?

It is focused on the day to day trials one is facing in an occupation. Realist fiction is a story where events seems real, characters in the story are dealing with real life problems. It usually occurs in the present. Events can be or can't be true but, for sure, the characters are all fictional.
