One pound is 16 ounces. When you add 9 ounces and 11 ounces you get 20 ounces. 16 can go into 20 one time with 4 left over. The 16 ounces is turned into one pound with the extra 4 ounces on the side.
So the answer is 1 pound 4 ounces.
