4 3/4 - 3 1/4 = 1 2/4, which is 1 1/2 OR 1.5

Let

x--------> the distance in miles that Renee need to hike to return to the place

we know that

x=4(3)/(4)-3(1)/(4) --------> equation
1

Step
1

convert mixed number to an improper fraction

4(3)/(4)\ miles=(4*4+3)/(4) =(19)/(4)\ miles

3(1)/(4)\ miles=(3*4+1)/(4) =(13)/(4)\ miles

Step
2

Substitute the values in the equation
1 and find the value of x

x=(19)/(4)-(13)/(4)

x=(6)/(4)=(3)/(2)=1.5\ miles

therefore

the answer is

1.5\ miles
