x + y = 76
1/3x + 1/2y = 34

First solve for x in the 1st equation...

x + y = 76
x = 76 - y

Now substitute 76-y for x in the 2nd equation...

1/3x + 1/2y = 34
1/3(76-y) + 1/2y = 34
76/3 - 1/3y + 1/2y = 34
-1/3y + 1/2y = 34 - 76/3
-2/6y + 3/6y = 34 - 25 1/3
1/6y = 8 2/3
